Materials Physics in Time and Space 4DMAP exploits leading expertise in x-ray and neutron science to gain unique insights in hard, soft and biological materials across time and length scales. Advanced measurements and simulation are performed both in-house and at international facilities, e.g. synchrotrons and free-electron lasers.

PMP Research

The Physics of Metal Plasticity

We have built a unique hard x-ray microscope at the ESRF in Grenoble, for filming the structural evolution of grains, domains and defects inside bulk crystalline materials. We explore this to understand how metals deform, get stronger and break – seen from a physics perspective.

The 3D Imaging Centre

The 3D Imaging Centre is national competence centre for X-ray imaging in materials physics, life science, engineering, and heritage studies. We develop advanced X-ray methods for use at the MAXIV synchrotron and our home lab.

ULTRAFAST X-ray experiments

Ultrafast

We use large-scale x-ray facilities to record ‘molecular movies’ which reveal how dynamics of atomic structure govern molecular function, answering fundamental photophysical and photochemical questions on charge transfer in photosensitizers & battery materials.

XmLIFE

Multiscale studies of cells and organelles within entire organs

We aim to establish novel phase contrast X-ray microscopy methods as a complementary investigation tool in plant biology and clinical practice. We explore the potential to perform 3D virtual histology of clinical tissue.

CO2 STORAGE

Biomineralisation with a focus on CO2 storage and geological materials imaging

We investigate the mechanisms of biomineralization and its potential applications in carbon capture. By studying the natural processes by which organisms form minerals, our work aims to enhance artificial carbon sequestration to combat climate change.

DTU Physics is a central partner at large scale facilities around the world: the European Spallation Source (ESS) and MAXIV in Lund, EuXFEL in Hamburg, and ESRF in Grenoble.
