About ESS

The European Spallation Source is a pan-European project with 13 European member countries, including the host nations Sweden and Denmark. The ESS facility is under construction in Lund, while the ESS Data Management and Scientific Computing Centre (DMSC) is located at the DTU Lyngby Campus.

ESS will provide researchers and companies with entirely new opportunities to study materials at an unprecedented level of detail. Where the Hubble Space Telescope makes it possible to look far out into the universe and reveal hidden structures in outer space, ESS makes it possible to look deep inside materials – all the way down to the atomic and molecular level. This knowledge can be translated into new solutions in areas such as life science, health, energy, the green transition and advanced information technology.

When ESS becomes fully operational, the facility is expected to attract around 2,000 researchers annually from universities and companies around the world and to play a central role in the development of new materials, technologies and treatment methods.
